How to Calibrate a Refractometer (and Why It Drifts)
Calibrate a refractometer with 35 ppt calibration fluid, never RO or tap water — RO water calibration is the single biggest cause of inaccurate salinity readings. What calibration actually does

Step-by-step calibration
- Clean the prism with a few drops of RO water and a soft, lint-free cloth, then let it dry completely — any residue skews the reading.
- Open the daylight plate and place 2-3 drops of 35 ppt calibration fluid on the prism, covering the surface fully with no air bubbles.
- Close the daylight plate gently so the fluid spreads in an even film, and let it sit for about 30 seconds to reach the instrument's temperature.
- Hold the refractometer up to a bright light source (daylight or a lamp, never direct sun through the eyepiece) and look through the eyepiece.
- Read where the sharp line between blue and white sits on the scale. If it is not exactly on 35 ppt (≈1.026 SG), turn the small calibration screw with the supplied tool until it is.
- Wipe the prism clean and dry, then take a real reading from your tank water to confirm a stable, repeatable result.
Temperature and ATC
Specific gravity is temperature-dependent — the same dissolved salt produces a slightly different refractive reading depending on how warm the sample is. Most hobby refractometers include ATC (automatic temperature compensation), a built-in correction that adjusts the reading for the sample's actual temperature at the moment you look through the eyepiece. ATC is a genuine convenience, but it is not magic: it typically compensates within a moderate range around room temperature, and it works best when the sample has had those 30 seconds to settle rather than being measured straight out of a cold fridge or a hot car. For the most consistent results, calibrate and test at a similar, moderate room temperature each time rather than relying on ATC to bridge a large swing.
How often to recalibrate
A reasonable baseline is once a month for a refractometer in regular use. Recalibrate sooner if the unit has been dropped, left somewhere hot (a car dashboard is a common culprit), stored for a long stretch between uses, or if a reading suddenly looks out of step with recent trends. It is also worth calibrating before mixing a large batch of new saltwater — an error there gets multiplied across every litre you add to the tank. Cheap swing-arm hydrometers cannot be calibrated at all and drift with age regardless, which is one reason most reef keepers move to a refractometer or digital probe as their primary instrument.
None of this matters much if the number disappears the moment you close the daylight plate. A refractometer, however well calibrated, only ever gives you a single point in time. What tells you whether your salinity is actually stable — or creeping upward with every top-off you miss — is a record of readings over weeks, not a fresh guess each time you pick the instrument up.
