Matching kit type to parameter

For alkalinity, titration remains the standard because the colour endpoint is easy to judge and the method scales well to frequent testing — you'll likely test this parameter two to three times a week, so cost per test matters. Calcium and magnesium also suit titration; both require diluting the sample first, which most kits handle with a supplied syringe. For nitrate and phosphate, reach for a digital checker or a kit specifically designed for low reef-relevant ranges — a general aquarium colour chart built for freshwater tanks simply doesn't have the resolution to distinguish 0.05 ppm phosphate from 0.15 ppm, and that difference is the entire story for algae control. pH is best read with a calibrated digital probe or controller rather than a colour kit, since it swings through the day and a single colour reading tells you nothing about the trend. ICP-OES lab testing sits in a different category entirely — it isn't a competing product for your weekly alkalinity check, it's a periodic baseline. A single sample gives you major elements, minor elements, trace elements and contaminant flags in one report, most of which no hobby kit measures at all. Most reef keepers send one sample a year, plus a follow-up after any major change such as a new salt brand or a large livestock addition.
